“2013 was to be my big year! World Age Group Triathlon Champs were coming to Hyde Park September 2013 (the 2012 Olympic course) & I was determined to qualify.
Training plan started October 2012, after a good base from Ironman France June 2012 & all went well right up to Christmas! Saltwell 10k was my first “try out” after changing from heel strike to fore foot running at the end of September & that is where my left Achilles went! Went to see Tim & he set me a rehab plan to work in with my training. I stuck to it & I was ready for the Stokesley duathlon at the end of March! Well impressed, especially after knowing how long some fellow athletes had been living with Achilles issues. It had only taken 3 months because I stuck to the plan!
Everything going smoothly again until the Stockton duathlon on 21st April – 16km of fast running on hard tarmac! My Achilles was fine but immediately after I started to suffer with my left plantar fascia. My first qualifier for the Worlds was 02/06 at Chester & then I had 2 more chances after that, but only 3 weeks in between each event – what should I do? Went to Tim again for treatment & advice for how to manage my injury for the 6 weeks left until Chester. However, I didn’t qualify at Chester (nothing really to do with the foot) so everything hung on The Dambuster in 3 weeks time – I finally qualified, but my foot was much worse by the end of it! I had qualified, but could I compete?
Tim then calmly drew up a 12 week plan leading into London which I again followed. Tim was very optimistic & said together we could get me to the start line fit to race & that is what happened! In that 12 weeks I only did 2 run sessions, the majority of the work done on the bike, aqua jogging or cross trainer. I did a lot of strengthening exercises, taping, icing & stretching. At the World Champs in London I competed in both the aquathlon (5k run) & the Standard Distance Triathlon (10k run) & ran without pain in my foot both times. I did not place as high as I’d hoped as I could not produce the run speed, but I was ecstatic to be able to compete on the world stage & now still move forward positively to next season! My physiotherapist Tim Pigott has been fantastic & very supportive.

Following a return from America I was getting pain in my hip and the top of my quad during the first few steps out the blocks due to tightness which wasn’t resolving with stretching and you showed me a technique of wrapping a mobility band around the area and then doing drill movements to encourage movement between the tissues.
Anyway, I meant to email you ages ago to say that it worked really really well, and it was something I incorporated in to my warm up routine, and after about 10 days the pain went all together. I did carry on doing it from time to time just to stay on top of things, but yes, it worked really really well, so thank you very very much for your help. “After all the training and hard work the final piece of the Jigsaw is making sure you get to use all the power you have built to get to the run in the best possible shape. To do this Tim’s bike fit was essential and we found many adjustments to my position to optimise my Ironman race performance and make me more comfortable. Tim provided a very professional and detailed service that explained the process and made it client centred and not a one size fits all approach. The technology and insight that Tim offered made it possible for me to ride a bottom end bike to a decent bike split time. It showed me that it is more important to have a good bike fit than have a top notch bike and poor setup. The Retul process was very insightful. As a cyclist you get a feel for what you are doing and how you pedal but by being able to see this and analyse real data you can then appreciate how small adjustments can impact and improve the efficiency of the pedal stroke. For example one leg was tracking straight up and down, the other looked like i was pedalling around an avocado! Some minor adjustments got this leg tracking better and I now feel more comfortable on the bike. – Andrew Megginson
As an endurance athlete my biggest struggle has always been doing too much enduring and not enough maintenance and rest. As a result I fell into overtraining regularly and suffered from a variety of over doing it injuries. This had a cyclical trend of panicking at time of injury and then over compensating with more training and then feeling horrible with fluey hell misery for 2-3 weeks in which I struggled to get of the sofa let alone go out for a spin. And repeat.
This tainted my life with genuine unhappiness and panic. My happiness is feeling like I have achieved something with each day and really love the process of training for an event more than the event itself. With injury both physical and mental I was unable to achieve any consistency and as we know consistency is where we make gains.
In my opinion the road to sporting success is working out our passion and perusing it. To do this successfully I believe we need to surround ourselves with people who have adopted the same persuit into their own lives. As a result this collective shares resources, knowledge and support. In turn this evolves our passions and feeds our investments. Once we have these people in our lives the day to day coaching, fitting, massaging, physioing (I know not a word) is the process that offers a lifetime of achievement rather than a single goal that once achieved will be replaced with another. To get to the point…Tim provides expertise in all aspects of the process. Tim has trawled through the research. He has done the courses. He has lived the highs and lows with many others and can draw from a lifetime of experience to make his clients process of improvement smooth and stress free. Tim’s single best quality is an ability to adapt the academic principles to fit the individual psyche of the athlete. I personally work best with reassurance and no expectations however others need goals, daily plans down to every last detail. The only fault I can find with Tim is his generosity with his time to his athletes as he will forgo his own needs to ensure others achieve theirs.
Life is very different now in the fact that I get to do what makes me happy. This is training everyday, eating well and spending quality time with friends and family. I don’t panic about resting, I don’t panic about injury as I know I have access to an expert that will always have an answer. I know Tim is one of this country’s most knowledgeable endurance coaches and this fact gives me “piece of mind” which as we know is half the battle.

Having ridden for a number of years and believing I had the correct set up on my bike I wasn’t sure that I was going to see much of a benefit with a new bike Fitting….
I finally decided to bite the bullet when having sustained a running injury I turned my full attention to the bike, numerous issues then started to appear on longer rides.. numb hands/ toes, not to mention other areas!!
Tim completely pulled the my old bike fit to shreds…. and although I’m still getting used to the new set up I’m already feeling the benefit…
I’m in a better position in terms of putting power down, I’m faster and ultimately and most importantly more comfortable on the bike.. Happy Days!!

“I had always been a fit and active person, but over the years I have sustained a number of serious injuries, which include a broken leg and broken neck. Approximately 15yrs ago I started to suffer with pain and limited mobility in my hips and lower back area, due in part to these injuries. Over the years, I have visited a number of physiotherapists, sports masseurs and chiropractors and although they helped ease the pain and lack of mobility in the short term, they never looked to identify the root cause. Tim was recommended to me 2 years ago, and after an initial consultation he recommended an MRI scan. The MRI scan identified Avascular Neucrosis in both hips. From this, Tim devised a program to improve flexibility and strength in areas affected. The improvement has been immeasurable and I now participate in regular exercise including yoga, golf and running. I have recently completed the Great North Run half marathon which I could not have envisaged completing 2yrs ago. I am now looking forward to a fit and active future which is all thanks to Tim.” Ian Rowell

Just a bit of post bike fit feedback. Things seem to be going well at the moment, been building the distance fairly slowly and went out for a hilly 100k in the lakes and am happy to report that I didn’t even have a twinge from my problematic knee! Good job really as it was followed up with a 10k hike up Pillar for a night of wild camping.
