Sports physiotherapy at HP3

Physiotherapy from clinicians who understand sport

HP3 is a clinically-led team. Our sports physiotherapists are HCPC-registered, teach and research in universities, and coach endurance athletes. Assessment comes first, so the rehabilitation plan that follows is built on what is actually wrong, not on what usually is.

We treat running injuries, cycling and triathlon injuries and mountain athletes, and plenty of people who do not race at all: back, neck and joint pain, rehabilitation after surgery, and injuries that keep coming back. Online physiotherapy consultations run by video from anywhere in the world, and in-person physiotherapy appointments through Worsley Physiotherapy Clinic in Manchester.

Booking starts with a short form that asks what is going on, your history and what you do. Your physiotherapist reads it before you meet.

What we help with

Injuries, pain and the training behind them

Most of what we see falls into one of four groups. The assessment is the same in each: find out what is wrong, find out what produced it, and plan both.

01

Running and triathlon injuries

Achilles and other tendon pain, plantar fasciitis, shin and bone-stress injuries, runner’s knee, ITB and hip problems that build up over a training block. We assess the injury and the training load that produced it, because treating one without the other is how running injuries come back.

02

Cycling pain and bike-related problems

Knee pain, lower back and neck pain, hand numbness and saddle problems on the bike. Our physiotherapists include a Retül-certified bike fitter, so riding position and tissue are looked at together rather than in turn. See bike fitting.

03

Back, neck and joint pain

Not everyone we see is training for something. Persistent lower back pain and neck pain, shoulder and hip problems, and pain that has outlasted the original injury are assessed with the same rigour and the same plain explanation.

04

Return to sport after injury, surgery or illness

Post-operative rehabilitation and a staged return to sport built around your event calendar, with the strength and conditioning that stops the problem recurring. Returning people to the start line is the team’s specialism, and our founder rebuilt his own racing after serious trauma.

Not sure whether physiotherapy is the right first step? Email physio@hp-3.co.uk with a few lines about the problem and we will tell you plainly whether we are the right people to see.

How it works

How a physiotherapy consultation works

Three steps, whether your consultation is online by video or in person at the clinic. None of them is a sales call.

01

Tell us the story

The booking form asks why you are seeking physiotherapy, your medical and medication history, and what you do for work and sport. Your physiotherapist reads it before the consultation, so the appointment starts with questions, not paperwork.

02

Assessment and diagnosis

A detailed history, then a movement and strength assessment on camera or in the room. You leave with a working diagnosis in plain language and an explanation of what is driving it. If you need imaging, a medical opinion or hands-on treatment that cannot be given online, we say so and arrange it.

03

Plan, treat, progress

A rehabilitation programme with exercise videos and clear progressions, and follow-up appointments that adjust the load as you improve. If you are coached by HP3, your physiotherapist and your coach plan from the same training record, so rehab and training are one plan rather than two.

What you need for an online physiotherapy consultation

  • A quiet, private space with room to move a few steps in each direction
  • A phone, tablet or laptop with a camera, propped so we can see you head to toe
  • A stable internet connection
  • Clothing that lets us see the area we are assessing

Does online physiotherapy work? A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 trials found internet-based telerehabilitation improved outcomes across musculoskeletal disorders, with results similar to face-to-face rehabilitation and at lower cost. A second 2024 review found real-time video physiotherapy matched in-person care for patient satisfaction, with similar or better attendance and exercise adherence.

Why HP3

One team for training and rehabilitation

Clinical assessment is built into how HP3 coaches, not added on when something goes wrong. The same principle runs the other way: sports physiotherapy here is delivered by people who understand training, racing and what an injury costs an athlete.

01

Clinicians who coach

Our physiotherapists are also endurance coaches and athletes. They understand the will to train, what a missed block costs, and how to keep you running, riding or swimming through rehabilitation rather than resting everything and hoping.

02

Research-active

Three of our physiotherapists teach on university physiotherapy programmes, and the team publishes research. What we recommend is what the evidence and our clinical reasoning support, not what is fashionable this season.

03

Built for a long life in sport

The aim is not only to settle this episode but to leave you more robust than before it: the strength work, load management and habits that keep people in their sport for decades.

Our standard

We will not promise a timescale before we have assessed you, and we will not treat online a problem that needs to be seen in person. If HP3 is not the right place for your problem, we will tell you where is.

Patient stories

What patients say

Three of the people we have treated, in their own words.

“The treatment I have received from Tim has been great, and I would definitely recommend him to others. As an international runner I particularly value that Tim is himself an athlete and understands the importance of getting me back training and competing as quickly as possible. I have been able to arrange appointments at convenient times, sometimes even at short notice, and Tim has liaised with other medical staff when I have been at events to ensure my treatment has been consistent.

With the right combination of hands on treatment, and personalised home exercise programs I have been able to recover quickly from injuries, and have hopefully prevented some future problems so I can continue to compete at a high level.”

Freya Ross (nee Murray), GB Olympic marathon 2012

“Following a return from America I was getting pain in my hip and the top of my quad during the first few steps out of the blocks due to tightness which wasn’t resolving with stretching. You showed me a technique of wrapping a mobility band around the area and then doing drill movements to encourage movement between the tissues.

Anyway, I meant to email you ages ago to say that it worked really really well, and it was something I incorporated in to my warm up routine, and after about 10 days the pain went all together. I did carry on doing it from time-to-time just to stay on top of things, but yes, it worked really really well, so thank you very very much for your help.”

L Evans, international 100m/200m track athlete

“After suffering severe back and neck pain for over nine years... I can honestly say that Tim Pigott, my physiotherapist, has literally given me my life back”

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a sports physiotherapist?

No. You can book directly. If anything in your history or assessment needs a medical opinion first, we will tell you at the consultation and explain why.

Is online physiotherapy as effective as in-person physiotherapy?

For most musculoskeletal problems, yes. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 trials found internet-based telerehabilitation improved outcomes across musculoskeletal disorders, with results similar to face-to-face rehabilitation and at lower cost (Molina-Garcia and colleagues, Annals of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, 2024). Some presentations do need hands-on assessment, imaging or a medical opinion. When yours does, we say so and arrange it, in person at Worsley if that is the right route.

What do I need for an online consultation?

A quiet, private space with room to move a few steps in each direction, a phone, tablet or laptop with a camera propped so we can see you head to toe, a stable internet connection, and clothing that lets us see the area we are assessing. We send the video link with your appointment confirmation.

How long is an appointment and what does it cost?

Appointment length and fees are confirmed when we respond to your booking form, before anything is charged. If you would like the figures before you book, email physio@hp-3.co.uk.

Can I be seen in person in Manchester?

Yes. In-person appointments, including hands-on treatment and bike fitting with 3D motion capture, run through Worsley Physiotherapy Clinic in Worsley, Manchester. Say on the booking form that you would prefer to be seen in person and we will arrange it.

I am coached by HP3. Will my coach and physiotherapist talk to each other?

Yes, with your permission. Your physiotherapist and coach work from the same training record, so the rehabilitation plan and the training plan are written together rather than negotiated afterwards. That is the point of a clinically-led team.

Can you work alongside my own coach, club or another clinician?

Yes. We regularly liaise with coaches, club physiotherapists and event medical staff so that treatment stays consistent, and we will share the plan in writing when you ask us to.
